What can happen if the chatbot is done worldwide?

Rafael Nuñez y Rafael Nuñez Aponte PornHub's chatbot has been successful in preventing and identifying abuse on the Internet

The chatbot appears when someone searches PornHub for any of the 28,000 terms that refer to child pornography. This pop-up, designed by the LucyFaithfull Foundation in conjunction with the Internet Watch Foundation, asks a series of questions and explains to people that such searches may be illegal.

The goal of this tool is to interrupt someone looking for child sexual abuse material, since its launch more than 170,000 times in March, which means 159 people have clicked on the helpline website.

Following its success, PornHub now wants to roll out the feature worldwide, a move that has been hailed as truly innovative in the British press. The fear perhaps resides in the fact that if in just one month in a country there have been such a number of searches, what can happen if it is done worldwide.

Apart from this novelty, PornHub for its part, in collaboration with the previous association and others, removes websites with content related to minors on a monthly basis.

The Safe Childhood Project is a US initiative launched nationwide in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, and has brought different cases to justice.

A 55-year-old man from Crofton, Maryland pleaded guilty yesterday to possession of child pornography. According to his guilty plea, Gordon’s IP address was found to access dark websites. Executing a search warrant at Gordon’s residence, police seized numerous computer devices that Gordon admitted belonged to him. Gordon faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison followed by life supervised release for possession of child pornography.

Community and school awareness campaign

Rafael Nuñez y Rafael Nuñez Aponte Safe Childhood Project

The Safe Childhood project is run by the United States Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Obscenity and Child Exploitation Section, the Safe Childhood Project, and brings together federal, state, and local resources to:

  • Locate, arrest and prosecute people who sexually exploit children.
  • Identify and rescue sexually exploited victims.

Likewise, under this project, effective community and school awareness campaigns are developed, focusing on important issues such as:

  • Cyber bullying.
  • Sexting: minors who take sexually explicit photos of themselves and post them on the Internet.
  • Predators of minors on the Internet and their typical modus operandi.
  • Prevention of the dissemination of personal information over the Internet.
  • Information for parents and schools that need additional resources.

The Fingerprint

Rafael Nuñez y Rafael Nuñez Aponte Sharenting Why shouldn't we share photos of our children on social networks

Publishing or uploading images, videos or any other type of recording associated with our children on the Internet in general, and on social networks, creates a digital footprint and exposes them to the different dangers that come with browsing the web. Even the information that parents share on social networks about their children can pose security risks and fraud.

The main risks that the public profiles of parents in social networks and messaging services, among others, that they can carry are the following:

  • It can lead to both physical and digital identity hijacking.
  • When minors access social networks, they can use these photos or videos to be the subject of memes, or any form of bullying on the networks.
  • During the adult lives of current minors, they may be victims of identity theft.
  • Digital reputation. When adult minors want to access prestigious institutions, the members of the selection committee will be able to access all the applicant’s information, especially social networks.

If we send images or videos via instant messaging (such as WhatsApp), we need to make sure that the people we send any content to are trustworthy and will not share it without our permission.

Spain is launching the «Clave A» project, which will provide training to more than 1,000 professionals already registered in the Canary Islands, who are related to work with children and adolescents.

How does this project work?

Rafael Nuñez y Rafael Nuñez Aponte Clave A Project Training professionals in the prevention of child sexual abuse

Among the achievements of the Investigating Court number 3 is that of reducing the time it takes to carry out a pre-constituted test on a minor, the creation of a specific kit designed for children to take DNA samples, putting an end to the “institutional abuse” that it existed before for girls, with the development of the branch of pediatrics and forensic gynecology.

The professionals who are in permanent contact with the children generate bonds of trust to be able to tell them what is happening, and provide them with all the possible instruments to facilitate the communication of this situation through signs or drawings such as those promoted by this project.

The training course planned within the program is cross-cutting training designed to:

  • Help detect situations of abuse.
  • Know how to deal with them.
  • Prevent them in such a way that they can accompany the minor and not become victims.

Most cases of sexual abuse are detected by the child’s teacher who notices the child withdrawn, sad, with a different behavior, so it is important to maintain good communication with children as well as observation to detect changes.

The European Commission (EC) presented a legislative proposal with new rules for Internet companies, and oblige Internet access service providers to detect and eliminate content of child pornography and sexual abuse of minors on the network, in addition to reporting on it to the authorities.

How to prevent pedophilia oon th Network

Rafael Nuñez y Rafael Nuñez Aponte The European Union presents a plan to detect and eliminate pedophile content on the network.

The new rules will operate in parallel with and in support of the regulation strategy in the EU Digital Services Law, which will introduce heavy fines for companies that fail to act on illegal content.

Under the new plan, companies will have to propose mitigation measures. Member States will have to designate national authorities in charge of reviewing the risk assessment and mitigation measures.

If an effective detection of material of sexual abuse of minors is carried out, they must notify it to the new EU center, which will provide information on identified material and will act as a filter. As for those images that cannot be removed because they are outside the EU or in non-cooperative jurisdictions, access to images and videos will be disabled.

The rules also require computer application stores to ensure that children cannot download programs that could expose them to “a high risk of sexual solicitation.” Simultaneously, the EC today published a new European Strategy for a Better Internet for Children, which seeks to provide safe digital experiences and protect minors from harmful and illegal online content.

A routine school task becomes the trigger for a family drama in which its creator, Maja Jul Larsen, delves fully into the rigid and complex system of Danish social services.

“Cry Wolf”, a series of eight episodes, is born from an essay written by Holly (Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl), a 14-year-old teenager, who recounts the alleged violent behavior of her stepfather with such precision that her teachers alert the social services. She talks about mistreatment, about domestic violence. The adults, of a troublesome girl who has made it all up. ¿Who has the reason? The series focuses on the complicated work of social workers and how their decisions affect a family under study.

The series “cry wolf” and its approach to child abuse

Rafael Nuñez y Rafael Nuñez Aponte "Cry Wolf" addresses an accusation of child abuse and its consequences

Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl manages to move between the fragility of the victim and the disturbing possibility that everything is an invention that responds to a motivation unknown to the viewer and those around her.

“Cry Wolf” was very well received in Denmark, where it was voted best drama at its television awards. In addition, she won Best Actress for Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl, Actor for Bjarne Henriksen, Supporting Actress for Christine Albeck Børge, and Supporting Actor for Peter Plaugborg. Pernille Fischer Christensen, May El-Toukhy, Samanou Sahlstrøm and Niclas Bendixen each directed two episodes.

In a report by the European Police Office (Europol) published in early April, its executive director, Catherine de Bolle, declared herself “concerned about the increase in child sexual abuse online” in the countries most affected by the pandemic.

Italy was the first western country to declare, on March 9, a state of confinement throughout the national territory, a measure that is still in force.

Also according to the data that BBC Mundo had access to, between March 1 and April 15, 2019, 83 crimes were reported in Italy for crimes related to child pornography online. In the same period this year – which coincides with the quarantine period – there have been 181 complaints, more than double.

In addition, so far this year, the Italian police have seized 108,123 GB of this type of digital content, which is equivalent to downloading the entire Netflix series “La casa de papel” on the mobile phone 50 times.

Finally, the Italian police registered a decrease in the average age of the victims: so far this year, the most affected are minors between 10 and 13 years old.

There are issues that are difficult to address in children’s literature. But, at the same time, children’s literature can be the best resource to deal with them effectively, with a careful combination of subtlety and capacity for conviction. The editorial Bellaterra has published ‘Sola en el bosque’, the story in which the Argentine authors Magela Demarco and Caru Grossi raise the problem of sexual abuse and violence in the home, a question “that makes you uncomfortable, angry and hurts” but that at the same time they consider unavoidable.

‘Sola en el Bosque’: children’s literature that teaches

“The biggest challenge was talking about child sexual abuse without naming it. Hence the resource of the human wolf and the house that, when everyone goes to work, turns into a dark and gloomy forest”.

The cover and two illustrations of ‘Sola en el bosque’

The book is accompanied by a reading guide with questions “that function as triggers to address the story” and that highlight some important concepts suggested by the text: “That love does well and that, if something does not do well or makes us feel bad, it is not love; that if they don’t like something or don’t want to do it, they can say “no”; or the issue of secrets, those that can be kept and those that cannot”.

Authorities are using everything they have at hand to fight and eradicate pedophilia, even state-of-the-art technologies as Artificial Intelligence  that creates decoy programs that lure out online criminals from their hiding spots so they are caught.

Sweetie infiltrated on the Deep Web

Sweetie is the software create in Holland, it poses as a 10-years-old girl online and acts as bait to attract hidden pedophiles in the darkest corners the online universe, also known as the deep web.

The bait software attracts pedophiles hidden on the deep web and extracts their information: location, age, and likes. Thanks to this tool, more than 20,000 pedophiles in 71 countries have been identified.

Infiltrating on the Deep Web

Some other methods used are infiltrating police officers in some areas of the Internet to act as bait to dismantle pedophile networks.

It is an indicative of the necessity of police services to be one step ahead with the new technological methods like artificial intelligence and  software, which together turns the infiltrated as part of the game by creating a reliable enough fake profile to pose a normal user.

After that, the police officer must earn the criminal’s trust, a process that can take months since it is a very complicated step. The result of these actions are closing pedophilia networks on the deep web, committing the following crimes:

  • Production and distribution of child pornography
  • Human trafficking

Online crimes can go from informatics, financial to trafficking illegal substances, thus giving several options to tackle each one.

Huge Operations

Operations against pedophilia networks like Childhood Light, and under international coordination (Equator, Panama, USA, Brazil, El Salvador, Chile and Paraguay) managed to do important arrest such as the 36-years-old teacher in possession of pornographic material.

The most recent case was a Whatssapp group arrested, in a joined operation coordinated by Europol, which exchanged pornographic material with pictures of children while being sexually assaulted.

As part of the Europol’s operationthe former Peruvian ambassador in Hungary, Gabor Kaleta, was arrested for being part of a pedophilia network. There were more than 19,000 child pornography files in a computer the diplomat had.

In addition, 16 Peruvian members of a group known as Extreme Children Porn Peru were arrested. Every day, material of sexually abused children was shared in this group. Authorities discovered one worker of the Jail National Institute of Peru was part of this group.

A series of reports from tech companies show that, in 2019, there was a peak, of up to50% in comparison with last year, in the number of audiovisual material showing child sex abuse online. The data showed that the tech platforms with most users around the globe, like Facebook or Instragram, have users sharing illegal content, despite their security and privacy policies.

Information Center Filled with Pictures

Image Taken from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children Facebook Page

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is an office with federal jurisdiction in the USA. It works with every public security agency. Last year, this office managed to compile, at least, 70 million pictures and videos with illegal content showing child sex abuse.

The Center reported that the amount of video shared through social media reached a record. Luckily, these illegal videos have always been popular among sex predators, and now these are more easily detected by some of the aforementioned digital companies.

More than 41 million videos were reported, an alarming figure if compared to five years ago, which it did not go over 350 thousand. Many of the pictures and videos were pinned down in multiple occasions as users received them.

The Center shared with the journal department of The New York Times which digital platforms reported the most amount of pictures of child sex abuse. The report details as follows:

Facebook: 60 million pictures and videos. The figure represents more than 85% of the total amount.

Instagram: now from Facebook, was responsible for 1.7 million additional pictures and videos.

Instagram has been the social network of choice by pedophiles; however, Facebook’s Messenger is taking the lead; the number of user can be reason of the increase.

Facebook claims that half the content found does not fully qualified as illegal, but it was reported as such to support the investigations from different public security institutions on this matter.

Snapchat, Twitter, and other social network companies also handed their reports on the pictures taken on their platforms. Moreover, search engines like Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, and the chat platform, Discord, also detected illegal content.

Children are not Adult Entertainment

An adolescent notified the adult web site, Pornhub, which the video of her rape was posted on the platform with very explicit taglines about what the users would watch. Not only the victim had to face the trauma for the rape, but the online exposure made her relive the attack over and over again.

The crime happened back in 2009, when the victim was 14 old. Two men recorded certain moments of the rapping and post them on the web site. Few months later, several people of her school shared the link of Pornhub, where there was various videos posted of the attack she was submitted to.

It was not until she pretended to be a lawyer ready to sue that the aforementioned web page removed the videos. For the victim, each of the 400 thousand views felt as a new attack.

The web site stated that accusations for videos with illegal content date back to 2009, with the previous headboard, and nowadays there are more strict measures and policies to fight unauthorized and illegal content as part of their stand against promotion of material displaying child sex abuse.

Currently, digital platforms use sophisticated technologies based on the experiences of their workers to detect, report, and eliminate any a/v material with illegal content or with child abuse, as well any attempt of sharing said content. Many companies train their own staff, others use third parties like Vobile, specialist in digital identification, who compares all new posts against potentially unauthorized material, and it makes sure that original video does not make it into the platform.
